A pipe that fat can not only carry eight channels of uncompressed surround sound, it can do it with up to 24-bit resolution and at sampling rates as high as 192kHz. The amount of bandwidth available for audio information has increased from about 1Mbps to 37Mbps, sufficient for all of the latest surround-sound codecs.ĮARC, introduced with the HDMI 2.1 standard, blows through that bandwidth limit, providing a staggering 37Mbps of bandwidth. ARC cannot carry 5.1 channels of uncompressed audio or anything more than that, nor can it handle high-resolution soundtracks encoded in immersive, object-based formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. So it should come as no surprise that the acronym eARC stands for enhanced Audio Return ChannelĪRC is superior to older methods of carrying digital audio (e.g., fiber-optical cables with TOSLINK connectors, and coaxial copper cables with RCA connectors) because it can deliver bandwidth of 1Mbps-almost three times more than those older cables, which are limited to 384Kbps of bandwidth.ĪRC has been “good enough” for many years, provided multi-channel soundtracks were compressed so they needed no more than 1Mbps of bandwidth.

Only the Ultra will apparently work with Disney +.ARC (the acronym stands for Audio Return Channel) is the digital conduit that TVs use to send their audio-whether it be from an onboard over-the-air tuner or an onboard or USB media streamer that connects to a movie service such as Netflix-over an HDMI cable to your soundbar or A/V receiver. I share this to let you know the path with your Roku may be a little bit frustrating. The HD Fury option seems rather expensive as well.

I love my 60 inch 1080p plasma and have no desire to upgrade. I now know the Firestick won't work for me and the other devices are currently not an option for me ($).

Only the Firestick, Roku Ultra, Apple TV 4K and the Xbox. Disney + support says the Premiere is not Atmos capable with their app. I hook everything back up but the display shows 4K signal with 5.1 only.
I returned the Firestick and purchased the Roku Premiere, after all Disney + website says it is supported and the Roku website says it supports Dolby Atmos and 4K, but no Dolby Vision. I tried EVERY combination in the Firestick's display menu and went back and forth to Disney + to see if it would work but to no avail. I found out the hard way that the splitter cannot down convert the Vision stream to 1080p properly, but I did have the Atmos signal. I then purchased a splitter which will send an EDID signal back to the Firestick in order to get the Vision/Atmos stream. Unfortunately, Atmos is tied to a 4K and Dolby Vision streams. The Firestick went directly into the Atmos capable Marantz receiver and then display out to the display. I only have a 1080p television that I am not willing to part with. I did try the Amazon FireStick 4K in order to get Atmos.
Roku's website sounds like the Premiere will support Atmos as well. I know that sounds cynical, but Disney's website makes it sound like Atmos will be supported if your system will support it.
